Arthur Nasson begs “Don’t Be A Douche Bag”

February 18th, 2010

ARthur Umbrella

Tiger, Leno, Palin, Paris… the ENTIRE cast of the Jersey Shore, Boston musician Arthur Nasson has a message for you – “Don’t Be A Douche Bag.” In this time of uncertainty, Americans are clamoring for an act of public reassurance and TGS and Arthur Nasson are reaching out to a nation in troubled times in an attempt to offer hope for a brighter future.

A focal track from Nasson’s recent album False Prophets, “Don’t Be A Douche Bag” can be interpreted by many as simply an underground artist’s reply to the mainstream media and pop-culture in general, but Nasson is focusing more at the bigger picture.

I’m looking to gather enough support to propose legislation to have ‘Don’t Be A Douche Bag’ replace the national anthem,” submits Arthur.  “What better advice is there to lead a nation?!”

Download “Don’t Be A Douche Bag” from False Prophets and feel free to post

Arthur Nasson has licensed two entire albums to MTV’s “Made” and “My Super Sweet Sixteen” and over 200 radio stations are currently playing his music, with more being added every week.  Nasson has been featured on NPR’s “Here and Now” and KALX’s “The Next Big Thing” w/ Marshall Stax and plans to tour the North East with his 12-year old son on drums in 2010.

False Prophets sounds like something John Lennon might have done. It’s varied, but cohesive; melodic, but adventurous. In an ideal world, Nasson would find mainstream success. But if he did, he wouldn’t have all that time to spend at home – or the chance to give his adolescent Bonzo live performance experience.”
- Jim Sullivan, Boston Herald

Like an unhinged Dylan hammering a jazz piano, Nasson has a great ear for a tune and seems to be willing to try anything once in order to make one, resulting in a fine burst of aural entertainment.”
- Americana UK

wonderful, tremendous artistic effort, listening to Arthur Nasson’s voice is a joy.”
- Inside Connection Magazine

“AWESOME”
- Burning World (UK)

Arthur Nasson’s False Prophets and Life After Telescopes are currently available via his own Philistine Records.   More info at http://www.arthurnasson.com/

Starving Artists “SING FOR THEIR SUPPER”

February 11th, 2010

israelcolorshots3_0001

The biggest bands in the world have a concept to promote their tour.  U2 did Zoo TV and the 360 Tour, the Rolling Stones had A Bigger Bang; so when Americana singer-songwriter Israel Nash Gripka and indie garage rockers The Fieros began planning their U.S. jaunt, they decided to be candid and “Sing For Their Supper.”

In March, the artists will set sail from New York City to the southern United States, stopping along the route to locally owned and operated diners and other food joints, with guitars, and forks, in hand.  Both acts will sing a song or three for one free meal, a tour premise not only feeding the bands their much needed daily sustenance, but also presenting a departure from the way individuals hear independent artists.

TOUR PROMO VIDEO

Everyone eats food,” says Gripka.  “So we’re going to bring our music to them, while they’re dining, for a completely different way of performing and listening to music and meeting people across the country.”

During their journey, both bands will be video-blogging from the road.  The videos will be up hosted by The Alternate Root, an interactive music magazine featuring all genres of traditional American roots and Americana music.

Israel Nash Gripka, the son of a Baptist minister, grew up in Ozark churches and was exposed to gospel music in all of its forms. His father also kept a collection of records that granted access to the world of classic rock n’ roll.  Here, Gripka learned about song-craft from The Beatles, grit from The Stones, and story telling from Credence Clearwater Revival and Townes Van Zandt.

Gripka is touring in support of his debut solo album New York Town, which reached #18 on the U.S. Americana Airplay Charts and #2 on the Euro Americana charts.  Americana UK called New York Town, “an album that mixes the ebullience of a storytelling Richard Thompson with the songwriting panache of Ryan Adams. A real gem to start off 2009 and a name I will be keeping a close eye on for sure.”

The Fieros are a straight up, no-frills Texas-American rock band.  Formed in 2005 and honored with Dallas Observer awards for “Best New Act” in 2006 and “Best Indie Rock” in 2007, their fan base has continued to grow steadily.  In their short time together they have opened for such acts as The B-52’s, The Polyphonic Spree, Okkervil River, The Redwalls, The Whigs and The Black Angels, and played over 200 shows in the southwest region.  In 2008 The Fieros relocated to Brooklyn and recently released their self-titled debut EP.

Front-man Joey McClellan, fresh off a tour with Hymns and Daniel Johnston, brings the melodic guitars and hooky riffs that make their songs feel instantly familiar. His co-songwriting brother Aaron McClellan provides the warm growling bass tones and powerful harmonies. Drummer McKenzie Smith of Midlake, Regina Spector, and St.Vincent fame brings the infectious drum grooves that make the EP a foot-stomping, anthemic classic. Recorded live at Midlake Studios in Denton, Texas over three whiskey-fueled nights, The Fieros EP is a throwback to the days when Rock and Roll still had swagger.

The “Sing For Your Your Supper” touring band is Israel Nash Gripka(Harmonica, Vox, Guitar), Joey McClellan(Guitar, Vox), Aaron McClellan(Bass, Vox) & Chris Grace(Drums, percussion) taking over on drums while McKenzie is on the road promoting the new Midlake album.

The Art Of Shooting release debut full-length “Traveling Show” on Aprul 27th

February 4th, 2010

taos2

A basement with no windows saw the birth of songwriting that came from the overactive pelvis, and a love of the ugly and loud. Out of that Brooklyn dungeon arose THE ART OF SHOOTING and their debut full-length Traveling Show, out April 27, 2010.

The Art Of Shooting juxtaposes dreamy shoegaze with crunchy, epic rock,” declares Time Out New York. The Brooklyn dream-punks forge an auditory surge that is artful, melodic and full of vocal harmonies.  Aggressive, dissonant lullabies are mixed with hints of PJ Harvey, Blonde Redhead and Polvo.

Traveling Show is an intensely personal work for The Art Of Shooting’s singer/songwriter/guitarist Kelly Irene Corson, who growls, shrieks and hums with a vibrato vocally evocative of Siouxsie Sioux and Chrissie Hynde balanced with the tenderness and vulnerability of St. Vincent and Feist.

Download “The Birdcage” from Traveling Show and feel free to post

This album is a documentary nod to Corson’s self- discovery of her truths.  Lyrically and dynamically, Traveling Show is a raw look at life.  “Truth till it can be humiliating,” attests Corson.  “It’s empowering to show your imperfections as a point of pride in who you really are.”

Traveling Show was produced by both Paul Mahajan (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On The Radio, Liars, The National) in Brooklyn and Keith Souza (Battles, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Lightning Bolt) in Pawtucket, RI.

This album has been a series of humbling miracles from beginning to end,” sums Kelly Irene.  “Though it’s tested the ends of my patience, self-esteem, and faith not only in other people, but also in myself, at this moment, I’m as proud of it as I’ll ever be.”

TAOS also have a 5 song EP, Tyrant’s Black Eyes, available through the Ace Fu Family Business label.

Traveling Show hits the streets on April 27, 2010.

These dynamic tuned, jerky rhythmed, acerbic tongued, goth tinged, two girl/one boy Brooklyn art punks might’ve fit right in on Rough Trade in 1980, or opening for Siouxsie a few years later.”
- Village Voice

Eerie, unearthly melodies promise to haunt your dreams.”

Singer/guitarist KELLY CORSON can go from a whisper to a scream at a moment’s notice.”
