RELEASE BY THE NECK ON MARCH 6, 2012 ON CAMPERS’ RULE
WED, FEB 8 @ GLASSLANDS IN BROOKLYN w/ QUILT
New York, NY (January 9, 2012) – Brooklyn’s backwords blends modern psychedelics with folk rock, 60s pop and a myriad of sonic surprises. THE L MAGAZINE calls it, “Twangy Americana” and “70s psych rock” and THE DELI MAGAZINE concedes, “They sure are doing something nobody else we are aware of is doing in NYC right now: unpretentious, mellow psych folk that speaks to the heart.”
It is, and is not quite The Beach Boys meeting Daniel Johnston along with The Velvet Underground, bumping into Wilco, to all share a joint. backwords release By The Neck on March 6, 2012 on Campers’ Rule Records.
backwords has two shows coming up in Brooklyn before heading down to SXSW 2012
Fri, Jan 13 – Brooklyn, NY – Cameo Gallery w/ Radical Dads
Wed, Feb 8 – Brooklyn, NY – Glasslands w/ Quilt
The follow up to 2010′s Quilt, By The Neck combines a straight pop-melodic thread with a warm experimental vintage rock-and-roll vibe. There’s multi-harmonies mixing with layered guitar riffs, (everybody sings) and lyrics that speak of sprained necks, stretched spines, and exhausted hearts.
By the Neck was recorded and produced in the band’s homespun basement studio, Campers’ Rule Records in Brooklyn, NY. With an array of tiny toy instruments, antique mics, quirky percussive pieces, synthy ipod apps and lovely artwork all over the walls, backwords experimented, took their time, fleshed everything out and really let this album come to life in the comfortable space where they live, breathe, and work. Brian Russ (guitar, vocals) spent countless hours mixing, editing, cutting, and experimenting with each track. Then he’d walk a few steps and crash into his bed. He has since started recording other Brooklyn bands at Campers’ Rule.

Will Bernard and Will Calhoun Will Make Global Noize with Jason Miles, DJ Logic and Falu
This past summer DJ Logic, Jason Miles and Falu recorded their second album as Global Noize. A Prayer For The Planet featured guest appearances by Karl Denson, Mocean Worker, Jeff Coffin, Oz Noy, Jay Rodriguez and others. This Sunday, January 8, the trio will perform the music from the release (and other material) at a special New York City showcase. Global Noize will be joined by guitarist Will Bernard and drummer Will Calhoun at the show which will take place at DROM, with Max Wild’s Afro-Electric Project also on the bill.
Christian Celaya (Benzos) and Woody Ranere (Lake Trout) make up the group known as WITH LIONS and November 2011 marked the kick-off of an ambitious four-EPs-a-year cycle with the release of Touch the Sound.
The New Yorker calls Touch The Sound, “slow-cooked shoegaze,” Metromix says “multi-layered,” The Owl Mag sees the music “influenced by ’60s pop and ’80s synth-rock” and Time Out NY dubs it, “moody, post-Radiohead art pop.”
BeatCrave calls out With Lions for, “Making friendly with an overall experimental vibe – think ambient undertones, orchestral interludes, built on a user-friendly, easily decipherable alternative rock foundation.”
But Secret Sound Shop sums it up best when saying, “With Lions are one of those bands whose music you hear and find instantly likeable.”
NYC electro rockers FIGO recently remixed the titled track to Touch The Sound. Check out the remix and enjoy a free download here.
Epic and cinematic, each With Lions EP is a mini score. Dark, with saturated harmonies, they show a different angle per track list, whether it’s a childhood film or a single scene etched in memory. Each release will explore a different mood and direction, thus freeing the band from the confines of a certain sound or trademark that their previous outfits were categorized by.
The next EP is Equipo (eh-KEE-po) – Spanish for ‘team’ and will be released in Spring 2012.
Apollo Run continues their annual tradition of releasing a holiday video with “All That You Give,” an original song about family, love and sacrifice. The video features friends, family and nursery school kids drawing sketches that reveal their interpretation of a specific moment in the song.
